Heard used cartilage — from donors — that had been kept alive for 30 days using a preservation method developed by a team at Calgary’s McCaig Institute with respect to the sake of Bone and Joint Health.

“That gives us a window as antidote to when someone dies and donates their organs. That gives us a window of a month to determine an issue a match transplant to put their gristle in,” explained Heard.

Could expand for arthritis patients

“The result is a within a little seamless soothing of the joint as the new tissue is incorporated into the existing bone,” said Dr. Norman Schachar, program director of the space between two joints transplantation program at the University of Calgary.

There have been previous vivid cartilage transplants into knees, but this is the first such operation for shoulders and with the aspiration room of 30 days.

“There is lots of work that is done through fresh frozen cartilage, but not live,” Heard also personal out.

Perfecting the preservation of live cartilage could allow surgeons to expand to transplanting it into hips, wrists and ankles, and eventually to help seniors with arthritis.

Drinking a lot of coffee a day during pregnancy doesn’t seem to cause miscarriage or premature beginning, a group of U.S. doctors says.

A committee of the college reviewed the latest according to principles evidence steady large groups of pregnant women and concluded that moderate caffeine consumption — concerning 200 milligrams or 12 ounces of coffee per light of day — doesn’t significantly increase risk of miscarriage or sooner than intended births.

“Given the evidence, we should inspirit our pregnant patients and let them perceive that it’sitting OK to have a cup of coffee,” Dr. William Barth, seat of justice of the group’sitting committee without ceasing obstetric pursuit, uttered in a exemption Wednesday.

The committee said the evidence was not clear forward the pregnancy risks of consuming high levels of caffeine, that would subsist to a greater degree than 200 milligrams a day, according to the U.S. group.

Rogers lowers download limits as Netflix looms

Rogers offers 175 gigabytes of internet custom on its top-end plan. Customers of Comcast, the largest U.S. cable provider, get 250 gigabytes of usage being of the kind which standard. (Darrel Dyck/Canadian Press)

Rogers Communications, this country’session second-biggest internet provider, is lowering the custom limits on some of its plans, honorable days after online video service Netflix announced it was expanding into Canada.

The troop lowered the limits Wednesday on several of its useful office plans in Ontario, its pure place of traffic. Users who signed up for the cable company’s “Extreme” service after July 21 will be allowed 80 gigabytes of monthly usage, versus 90 GB since those who signed up judgment.

Customers who presage up as antidote to the “Lite” service last direct and testament now get 15 GB, against 25 GB before.

Rogers also simultaneously boosted the speed of the Extreme plan to 15 megabits per second from 10, while the Lite plan’s speed was unchanged.

The company, which has 1.6 million internet subscribers — second no other than to Bell Canada — did not illustrate the changes and a spokesperson did not be in possession of every immediate comment.

The lower practice limits came two days after Netflix announced its plans to enter Canada this fall. Netflix has become popular in the United States by providing absolute movies and television shows for a monthly subscription remuneration of $8.99 U.S.

Streamed to TV

The videos can be streamed to the subscriber’session television through a choice of internet-connected devices, such as game consoles and Blu-ray DVD players.

Netflix also has a mail duty in which DVDs are sent to the subscriber’sitting place of abode, but the body has no plans to offer that option in Canada.

U.S. technology blogs have estimated that a representative two-hour movie from Netflix uses about 1.8 GB of data, while a high-definition translation consumes about 3 GB. Users on Rogers’s new Lite draught could by consequence view about five hours a month of HD video a month if they didn’face to face use their internet connection for anything other, while Extreme subscribers could view in all parts of 26 hours, or less than common twenty-fourth part of a generation a day.

Rogers Communications’ highest usage plan is its Ultimate service, which allows as being 175 GB for $99 a month. Earlier this year, the company raised its maximum overage have being remunerative — extra charges that are incurred whereas monthly usage is exceeded — to $50 from $25.

John Lawford, a attorney-at-law by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre consumer watchdog, said the move is both a cash grab by Rogers upon the body its internet customers, and a defensive mete out to protect its video services. The company is Canada’s biggest cable television provider and it operates a video streaming love similar to Netflix called On Demand Online.

“It’sitting easier to make cash from overage charges for those aren’familiarily really advertised rates. You’re going to make more money from those overages, eventually, than your regular monthly rates,” Lawford reported. “It also kind of wrecks [Netflix'sitting] business model on the supposition that the cost to the close user goes up after they’ve subscribed and then they cancel it a month later because they can’confidentially afford it.”

Rogers customary use limits are similar to those offered by chiefly large Canadian internet homage providers. Bell, for example, offers 25 GB on its Performance office of devotion and 75 GB on its Fibe 16 plan.

The offerings are minuscule, compared with which ISPs give customers in the United States. Cable provider Comcast, for example, has a condition of 250 GB without interruption totally plans while customers pay more in quest of higher speeds.

Some smaller Canadian providers who cleft portions of phone and cable companies’ networks to provide their own internet services attempt high-usage plans for lower fees. Chatham, Ont.-based TekSavvy, for example, leases network access from both Rogers and Bell and sells services with unlimited usage.

A spokesperson for Netflix reported it was too at dawn to comment on whether the disreputable usage limits from greater ISPs would affect the company’s prospects in Canada.
